PRODUCT: A medicinal herb whose local name is Kiwavi (Thabai), is also used as food from the urticaceae family. It is a perennial bush with dark green leaves with serrated margins and small flowers covered with tiny hairs on the leaves and stem, which inject an irritant into any skin it comes into contact with. It looks a lot like pumpkin leaves and is used locally as an ingredient of the famous local cuisine - Irio. In the United States, Canada and Europe where it grows wild in the wastelands, it is steamed and used like spinach or to make soup. Boiling dissolves the painful bristles. It is also widely used in Asia and especially India and Pakistan. It is valued for its curative properties for many maladies and its high nutritive value. Young shoots are particularly high in Vitamin C.
